Free Verse: Like a Dead Weight

A free verse poetry, “Like a Dead Weight.”

The most difficult decision to make in a relationship is to walk away, I’ve had to make this choice twice. Sometimes, things just don’t work out, or the level of the playing field changes. I became a victim of verbal abuse, thrown like rocks against a soft surface.

Image of Free Verse Poetry, "Like a Dead Weight."

It penetrates. I catered to this negativity, thought all my love could save his soul, it didn’t change anything, only me. And when I was drowning in the bitterness of time, I looked into the mirror and saw my reflection. I had aged, with unhappiness written in lines across my face. With the last trip to the emergency room, suffering from hypertension and an anxiety attack that brought on a stroke. I could have died. I found me.

In this free verse poetry and digital art piece maybe you can see or feel the change of choices.

Free Verse Poetry: Like a Dead Weight

Like a dead weight, I felt it…
a heaviness bearing down on my heart; like the many times
of knowing what rocks felt like if you pack them far too long.

It felt awful. It anchored my soul.
(Anchored and not a dead weight.)

The yellow glow of words shared to you to encourage,
couldn’t change who you are.

My perceptive heart becomes aware of those same patterns; like pattering rain on a flat rooftop.

How I know of compilation

First, it’s just one. Then more adding like numbers getting bigger. bigger. Then, it eats away at your happy place; like weeds growing in a garden stealing color.

I couldn’t take it anymore. Today, I opened my heart and let the black crow free.

I hope you can find another resting branch.

A bluebird perched upon my branches today and sang.
And the trickling sun fingers touched my face.

I breathe long and hard and smiled for the first in awhile, life into mine soul again.

So I write this to you, Roderick Bates of Rat’s Ass Review.  I’m walking you through this horrific day through these lines.

Urban Ekphrastic Poem: Color-Blind

In this urban ekphrastic poem, “Color Blind.”

Love is blind, kinda like this digital art here, I created a fence line that runs into nowhere land…A mirage of reds, burgundy, greens, blues all collide. Relationships can be that way too especially with the struggles and challenges of everyday life. An ekphrastic poem to enjoy! Happy Friday everyone! Have an awesome weekend too!

Urban Ekphrastic Poem: Color-Blind

Like an abstract painting before it’s brought to life by brush strokes, unveil me into a single color enough to condone and let it bleed into a body that can breathe a life or at least an appreciation for one.

You are color-blind, leaning against the truck beside me as we listen to a lead guitarist riff…that gave rock-n-roll a name.  Or maybe you know, clinging to our mutual partiality of Ted Nugent set to obscurities.

I love “Great White Buffalo” like the first ridiculous story a boy told me on that old country road—that stirring of rebellion over tradition. Or maybe it was just the way he walked…fluidly. My attraction needs color and passion; the scratching of the guitar, the deliberate strokes.

I feel more vulnerable when you and I discuss our devotion to special music, of craziness, your fingers already, indulging goosebumps on my neck. They never stay long enough though…to paint abstract on my canvas. And how I want to let our colors bleed.

What is Ekphrastic Poem?

Poets.org expresses it like this: Ekphrastic poems are now understood to focus only on works of art—usually paintings, photographs, or statues. And new ekphrastic poems have shrugged off antiquity’s obsession with an elaborate description, and instead have tried to interpret, inhabit, confront, and speak to their subjects.

Urban Free Verse: Tender Tugs of Love

In this urban free verse poetry, “Tender Tugs of Love.”

A man and woman share a gift. The gift to stop and show one another that life is too short, one must take the rainy days and enjoy a Starbuck’s coffee standing in the rain. Romance and love are to be in enjoyed in the most unpredictable moments. An urban free verse poetry and digital art piece to enjoy.

Urban Free Verse: Tender Tugs of Love

Urban Free Verse Poetry: Tender Tugs of Love

Cobblestones have cracks
I’ve lost you in one again.

A dark, dingy place of debris: my countless times
of quiet emptiness.

I felt silence. Distant under your work schedule.
(Distant and not cracks.)

Tender tugs of love petals sent to you,
and nothing back.

My keen senses become fine-tuned
to the great efforts, you put forth:
like busy beavers rebuilding a dam after
a summer flash flood.

How do I sense this from you?

The quick short messages, messages of briefness,
of where you’re at the moment when a cat
has stolen your tongue from your mouth.

There isn’t a metaphor for grinding work.
But the strength to persist day after day.

Today, the structure of life,
changes in the rain drop falling on broken pavement.

I watch as a squirrel hovers under green, under canopy.

A once busy man now brings,
Starbucks coffee to a gray day.

Some days here in Seattle bring thunder and rain.
If I could have more days like this,
sipping coffee with him is bliss.

These days are gifts.

Urban free verse poetry: Yellow Breathing Dragon

I anticipate a storm.
The yellow breathing dragon from afar,
has breathed its massive plumes.
Smoke lingers in the air, suffocating life from lungs.
White speckles-blanket everything.
Even the sun hides, wearing an orange face.
Hearts are heavy.
An echoing emptiness, of existence, now
settles upon broken bones, branches, within scars.
Dull white forces patches of green,
Coating, what once was a crimson red bloom.
Petals are weighted, wilted.
Distant Gray clouds loom, deep pain.
I anticipate a storm coming.
Jagged fingers strike in the distant.
It may last a day or two.
Flowers can feel the change in the stale air.
I, can too.
Trees bend to the left, awaiting its force.
I hope for blue skies and droplets of tears.

In this urban free verse poetry, “White Flowers Flirting.”

She hears his broken voice, weighted with the responsibilities of more than he can handle. It pains her heart, like stones, weighted, some heavier than others, she tries to soften the morning with tender words and caring. An urban free verse poetry and digital art piece to convey a soft story of love.

Urban Free Verse: White Flowers Flirting

Like kicking stones, I felt the tug…
a thud in my heart; my first inkling
of sadness in your voice.
It felt heavy. Strained under stress.
(Strained and not a stone.)
White flowers of flirting with you,
couldn’t change it.
My hearing perception becomes
articulate to your voice; like singing birds
on a window seal.
How have I become so in tune?
A small ping. Pings with this heart of mine,
of your feelings, when darkened clouds fade the moonbeams
in your eyes.
This-isn’t a metaphor for soul material.
But depths of souls united.
Today, the beckoning dynamics of life,
waver in the trickling of sun fingers
upon your black truck.
I watch as sparrow flies into blue, and fade.
The once youth now bows under,
the strain of another day.
Some days don’t bring sunshine and bliss.
If I could change the weathering storm,
I would.

This storm will soon pass.

Free Verse: A Brush of Water and Color

A free verse poetry, “A Brush of Water and Color.”

Emotions remind me of watercolor paints. The mixture of water, color, and feelings, or moods and how they flow together. The sadness of blue mixture with water. The red glow of love or fury fire. Greens of envy and shine. In this free verse poetry and digital art piece, I express sadness and love.

Free Verse: A Brush of Water and Color

I am a watercolor paint brush.
I bleed red at times.
Red that spills from cuts of words.
Red that grows from love’s kiss.
I see red when I look into his baby blue eyes.
It what’s in them,
that deep in the soul look.
I’ve seen, he’s crawled into mine
so deep, cupid’s arrow got stuck there.
It doesn’t hurt either.
My canvas is white.
I fill or should I say spill color.

Watery emotive of time.

Crystal droplets of blue, of time…of lines.
He helps with this color.
How he paints lines down my thighs.
My goosebumps wash cold shivers of pink.
How he tenderly paints.
With delicate words and brushes, and how
my fingertips brush of red watercolor.

Free Verse: She’s Holding His Heart

A free verse poetry, “She’s Holding His Heart.”

Love can be such a challenging emotion. I’ve learned communication is the key to the longevity of a relationship, to have the ability to agree or disagree without becoming uncivil. To be able to resolve problems together quietly. In this free verse poetry and digital art piece written about resolution and forgiving.

Free Verse Poetry: She’s Holding His Heart

My heartbeats fade; hiding behind a glass wall.
I said I wouldn’t do it again: not one tear.
I am cold. I am warm.
My blurry reflection eyes, of me
Like sprinkling raindrops, the profile of the moon,
breaking through gray.
I turn this direction—warmth dissipates; I’m hurting.
I turn that way—I’m inside your arms once again,
depending on when you have time to spare.
I walk through the parking lot, of dimly lit high street lamps.

Headlights flash, I jump aside.
Windows roll down, voices yell into the night.
Pounding feet behind me, warm arms reach.
A masculine man stands before me;
The baby blue eyes look through to mine. I’m a window.
He’s lost his heart inside warmth. In the glass wall
a woman’s trying to forgive words;
No, she’s holding his heart.

Free Verse: Blue Thoughts

In this free verse poetry, “Blue Thoughts.”

The first glance, twinkling is the light, a first love. To fall in love, to stay in love is not of choice. It is on the chances, the risks, the willingness of working, talking, through the struggles, through the blessings. When loves greatest strength is in the doing, not the saying of words, there is a strength in love. A free verse poetry and a digital art piece to personify love.

Blue Thoughts

Free Verse Poetry: Blue Thoughts

Blue thoughts.
Blue thoughts in a cage, my mind barred.
Your eyes, as blind as the blue.

We are
lost,
barred by the black emptiness, we seek
the words that ascended harmony:
love.

Love—a blinded emotion.
Your heart and mine.
They see
to passion.

Devotion.
Expressed thoughts upon expressed thoughts
adds strength to it.

Three words like these words and the interpreters will
succeed in the stories and struggles together in love.

Coiling Soul

This free verse poetry, “Coiling Soul” reminds me of nature and love.

Like a plant that coils to retract to a state being or not being. Like a fern that uncoils yearning for growth and the sun. We, as people react in the same way. Hurt so badly at times, coiling into our scars. We, hide, yet we should reach outward, seek help and communication in those that support us. A free verse poetry and digital art piece to enlighten the spirit into uncoiling.

Coiling Soul by Linda J. Wolff

Free Verse Poetry: Coiling Soil

I found you.
Curled around your soul, coiling
bitter scars.
Heart—stuck like dark glue.
Tough and unforgiving.
I had mine too.
It was the baby blue in your eyes.
A face lined with words.
A body spoke of wanting hunger.
A heart in need of nurturing.
Called to me.
Like a silver magnet.
I’m drawn to you.
Sparks fly behind flecks of blue.
I don’t think you saw it in the mirror.
If you cry, I’ll hold your tears,
then I’ll water the seeds that I’ll plant there
with love.
For awhile, I held my scars tight
to my soul too
But, I soon realized I couldn’t pack
dark weighted rocks anymore.
I could’ve drowned.
I hold hopes, light, and laughter.
And laughter in glass jar spilling.
Coiling soul.
